PHILIPSBURG–House searches took place in five private dwellings and three company buildings on the island yesterday. The premises are located in Pointe Blanche, Cole Bay and Sucker Garden, amongst others areas.
The house searches were led by the judge of instruction in the presence of the Public Prosecutor, and were part of Operation “Bromelia,” which is a money-laundering investigation. The investigation is being led by the Recherche Samenwerkingsteam (RST) in cooperation with Korps Politie Sint Maarten (KPSM), as well as with the French Police, who searched a house in French St. Martin as part of the investigation.
During the searches, items searched for in particular were administrative paperwork. Items, such as administrative documents and data carriers were confiscated for further investigation. Five cars and one truck were also confiscated.
A man with the initials O.D. was arrested for possession of a firearm. In relation to the same investigation, six suspects were arrested in September for possession of firearms, narcotics and a significant amount of money. Four suspects are still in pre-trial detention. Operation Bromelia is a direct result of these arrests.
